About Sammamish Comment

Sammamish Comment was founded in 2002 (or thereabouts) by Scott Hamilton to provide news and comment independent of official city statements, press releases and newsletters; and to provide an independent view of one of the two newspapers then providing news coverage in Sammamish that was poorly reported and thinly researched. When I was appointed to the Sammamish Planning Commission in 2004, The Comment was assumed by Tom Vance, who served as editor until his appointment to the Commission. Publication was suspended then. I left the Commission Dec. 31, 2009, and resumed publishing The Comment.

Having been involved in Sammamish events since the Incorporation vote in 1998, and every election since, I have a vast institutional knowledge that often provides background to postings.

Today Sammamish is covered by the Sammamish Review and Issaquah/Sammamish Reporter. Sadly, neither does an especially good job of covering news and investigative reporting is non-existent. Editorials are non-existent in The Reporter and editorials in The Review this year (2015) fall into the category of Motherhood and Apple Pie. Accordingly, The Comment provides news, comment and investigative reports that are lacking in the local papers. Often the comment is a call-it-like-I-see-it approach that may be welcome as refreshing by some and not so welcome by others. That’s the nature of the beast. With no advertising or advertisers to appease, Sammamish Comment can provide hard-hitting reporting and observations that are lacking in the local papers.

In August 2016, I moved to Bainbridge Island after 20 years in Sammamish. The Comment will continue through 2017 in order to finish The History of Sammamish (According to Scott) series that began in January 2016; and through the November 2017 City Council election in which four seats are up. Sammamish Comment will close December 31, 2017.

This will be one of those things that when we have something to say, we’ll say it. There is no specific publishing date.
